材料科学工程系源于1951年成立的西南交通专科学校建材教研室，2000年获批材料学硕士点，开始招收硕士生，2001年开始招收材料科学与工程专业本科生。现有教师27人，其中教授9人，副教授11人，博士学位占比81.5%。拥有包括交通土建工程材料国家地方联合工程研究中心、重庆市材料实验教学示范中心等在内的7个国家级/省部级科教平台，以及重庆市创新创业示范团队、重庆市教学团队等7个市级教学科研团队。设有材料科学与工程一级学科硕士点和“材料与化工”专业学位硕士点。2013年获批重庆市“三特行动计划”特色专业，2014年获批重庆市“三特行动计划”特色学科专业群，2018年入选重庆市首批“一流专业建设点”，2020年入选国家一流专业建设点，2023年材料科学与工程专业通过教育部工程教育认证，2025年获批低碳交通与新能源材料重庆市现代产业学院。本系以“厚基础、强实践”为特色，与多家企业共建实训基地，毕业生就业率连续五年保持90%以上。

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering originated from the Building Materials Teaching and Research Sections of the Southwest Transportation Technical College, established in 1951. The master's program in materials science was officially approved in 2000. Undergraduate enrollment in the Materials Science and Engineering program began in 2001.There are 27 faculty members (81.5% holding doctoral degrees), including 9 professors and 11 associate professors. The department has 7 national/provincial-level scientific research and education platforms, as well as 7 provincial teaching and research teams. The major offers first-level master's programs in Materials Science and Engineering, as well as professional master's programs in Materials and Chemical Engineering. In 2013, the program was recognized as a featured specialty in Chongqing’s “Three Special Actions Plan”, and in 2014, it was approved as a key discipline cluster under the same plan.In 2018, it was listed among Chongqing’s first batch of First-Class Undergraduate Programs, and in 2020, it was selected as the national first-class undergraduate specialty construction site. In 2023, the program was accredited by the China Engineering Education Accreditation Association. Approved in 2025 to establish the Chongqing Modern Industrial College of Low-Carbon Transportation and New Energy Materials. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering places a strong emphasis on solid theoretical foundations and rigorous practical training for student development, and has successfully established joint training bases with leading enterprises in the industry.The graduate employment rate has remained above 90% for five consecutive years.
